How to Measure and Choose the Most Suitable Watch Diameter for You
First, obtain a Vernier caliper which has units in millimeters. We advise you to choose calipers that are made of plastic because those made of steel could scratch your watch case. Next, apply the caliper to the diameter of your watch and then you can read the numbers on the digital panel or on the body of the caliper.
Another part that you can measure on your watch is the distance between the lugs. The lugs are the parts of the watch casing that retain the two pieces of the strap. To measure, you have to span the distance between lugs using the caliper. You don´t need to remove the strap or band from your watch.
Last but not least, is the thickness of the watch case. To measure the thickness, apply one side of the caliper to the front of the case and the other to the back of the case.
Once you know the diameter, the distance between lug to lug, and the thickness of the case, your wrist size must also be taken in to consideration.
As a general guideline, if the watch diameter is about 34-36 mm it will be suitable for wrist sizes of 6 inches or less. If the watch diameter is about 38-42mm it will be suitable for wrist size of 6-7 inches. A watch diameter above 44 mm is suitable for use on a wrist that is more than 7 inches.
